The Holiday season has come to an end by now, but that doesn't mean the goodness stops! We had a number of promotions over the Holidays, both in store and on Government street. Shoppers had opportunities to vote for their favourite storefront, collect stamps for their "passport to Government Street", as well as enter various in-store draws up and down the street. Well, we're more than excited to share the names of our winners with you!

Going shopping in downtown Victoria is always a treat... and especially so during the holidays! Our downtown is easy to navigate on foot while providing a plethora of local and/or eco-friendly merchants to choose from. As if the joy and light in the city wasn't enough, Government Street (the Heart and Soul of Victoria) is offering some extra incentive to come downtown this year.

The holiday season is upon us, and many are opting to buy gifts locally this year.  It is a growing trend that has a multitude of benefits, and one that we hope will continue to gain steam.

Chriss Smith, creator of Art of Zen Crochet

This week we are revisiting a previous series - Faces Behind Our Products.  For our third entry, Chriss Smith, the face behind the Art of Zen... Crochet, has been kind enough to allow us to feature her, and answer some commonly asked questions! If you'd like to see our last entry, on Echos in the Attic, click here.

We love to give back to our communities, so when H&C was approached by Andrea Paquette, creator of Bipolar Babe, to participate in the group's 3rd annual benefit gala, we were excited and honoured. Bipolar Babe is a support group for those suffering from Bipolar disorder whose goal is to create awareness and educate people on the illness with hopes of stomping out stigma. The evening was filled with a variety of acts, including musicians, comedians, inspring speeches, and of course.. H&C fashion!

Brrr.. what a blustery day out there! As the beautiful, warm hues of autumn fall and scatter around us, winter's brisk winds have swooped in. It sure is getting chilly, and H&C is beginning to think about the holidays.. are you?

A hemp stalk, with splayed fibrous tendrils.

Hemp has long been celebrated, dating back to usage in Europe and Asia as early as the year 8000 BC. It has a colourful history, but it wasn't until the 1850s that it began to be peppered with propaganda and controversy. Remember, remember - hemp WAS legal tender.

The Dirty Dozen List

Many of us try to make good decisions regarding our health and the environment.  We find alternative ways for transportation, try to buy local and/or organic produce, but how many of us think about our cosmetics and body care products? The "Natural" label is good enough, right? Wrong.

Tue October 18th 2011 -- 2:22pm

We believe that hemp is a very large piece of the solution to many of our global environmental problems.  We can eat it, wear it, and nourish our skin with it, while the plant gives back to the earth.  It doesn't strip the soil of its nutrients - in fact, it does quite the opposite, replenishing nitrogen into the ground it is grown in.  It digests more CO2 than trees, requires less water than cotton to grow, and needs virtually no chemical aid (herbacides or pesticides) to flourish.  Why, then, are we not using more of this plant?

April is National Poetry Month- established by the League of Canadian Poets in 1999 with the aim of bringing together schools, publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, and poets across the country to celebrate poetry and its vital place in Canada's culture.

H&C Participated in Poetry Month this year by teaming up with Susan Stenson to create a Poetry display in our windows (visible from the Fort Street side of our store).
