Founders of Abeego, Colin and Toni Desrosiers, came up with the concept for their natural food storage system after thinking long and hard about the question: “What did we do before plastic?”
“I wanted to gain a better understanding about storing food in a natural environment, free from synthetics and as nature intended,” Toni told H&C. She was convinced that all the materials needed to create a safe, convenient food storage system could be found in nature—and she was right. This concept set her on the successful path to creating Abeego products.
What makes Abeego unique is its simplicity. “The formula is basic and the results are natural,” Toni explained to H&C, who was the first to hear her full ingredient list! The simple list includes: a hemp/cotton fabric, Abeego’s blend of beeswax, jojoba oil, and dammar resin. “That’s it. We love the natural anti-fungal properties of hemp, along with the amazing sustainable qualities of the fibre.” This short list means each ingredient in Abeego is essential to the recipe and aids in keeping our food tasting delicious and fresh. So simple, sounds like we could make it at home—but perhaps we better to leave it to the professionals!
Apart from the natural anti-fungal and sustainable properties of hemp, what part do the other ingredients in the Abeego formula play? “Beeswax is anti-bacterial, breathable, and a humectant. Jojoba oil is anti-fungal and has a 100-year shelf life. In fact, it’s not an oil at all, it’s a liquid wax. Dammar resin has strong anti-septic qualities.”
Abeego is so simple and natural, you can tell just by its colour. The natural colour of Abeego is a direct reflection of the source of the beeswax used, since beeswax colours vary slightly depending on what type of pollen the bees have collected. “Right now, our beeswax is from Saskatchewan where the bees are collecting pollen mainly from clover, so it has a light golden color,” Toni told H&C.
Colin and Toni take every measure to avoid using plastic. Their packaging is plastic free, and they ship all their products without plastic. They also use good, old-fashioned human power, making all Abeego products by hand. “Abeego is a time intensive project and we love every minute of it,” Toni said, explaining that they are currently working to improve their manufacturing process to possibly include some sort of mechanization, although they would love for the entire production line to be run on human energy and by human hands.
Colin and Toni’s hopes for the future are that one day plastic will be extinct from our minds, that it will simply become a “hiccup in the span of history.”
“I would love to see people around the world using plastic free food storage... Abeego, glass jars, plates over bowls, etc. You can store your food with out using plastic.”
