Earth Creations

Joy and Martin of earth creations have always been interested in nature and conservation. Creating sustainable products is something that had their names written all over it, “It is a great fit with what we believe in,” Joy told H&C. Yet it happened, almost, by accident.

Joy had taken a bike ride through Alabama after a rainstorm, and some of her clothing had accidently been “dyed” by the red dirt. Martin, her boyfriend and chemical engineer (now, also husband and partner), saw the red dyed t-shirt and a light bulb went off in his head. Before starting earth creations, Joy had been a small business consultant. She had seen many ideas go across her desk everyday, but this one resonated with the couple.

What makes earth creations extremely unique is their use of low impact, natural dyes, which Martin created solely for earth creations. All of their products are proudly manufactured in the USA, using eco-friendly materials such as hemp and organic cotton. The organic cotton comes from the US and Canada, but the hemp and organic cotton blends are imported from China because, as Joy coyly puts it, “In the USA hemp is a dirty little secret! If only we could turn back the clocks to the last century when hemp was revered.”

When asked what made Joy and Martin realize the importance of “going green,” there was no turning point for the two—it was in their blood from the beginning. Joy tells H&C, “It is just who we are as individuals so it is only natural that it would translate into our business as well.  I am not sure I could just have any old job. I need to feel passionate about what I do.”

Joy and Martin’s hope for the future is that more companies become pro-actively eco-conscious and begin to understand how important it is to offer sustainable products, especially those made in North America, “This way our business could grow and employ more people and make the world a better place… Someone has to change the multi-billion dollar fashion industry!”
