We're submitting an official petition to the Canadian government, something we're inviting our customers and stake-holders to take part in, requesting that investments in Canadian infrastructure are considered, asking M.P. Denise Savoie to present our concerns to the House. We feel that there is significant economic benefit to investing in a product that can be used to make building materials (like insulation, hemp-crete and particle board), paper, bio-fuel, clothing, food, molded plastics, an array of industry specific products (like horse bedding) and a range of oil based products (creams, lotions, cooking oil, soaps, etc.) Our petition asks government to consider the economic and inevitable environmental advantage of investing in infrastructure for Industrial Hemp in Canada.

Transition to a Sustainable Economy with Canadian Industrial Hemp

We, the undersigned are writing on behalf of many Victoria residents and citizens from across the country who would like to draw the attention of the House of Commons to the following:

THAT industrial hemp is a valuable fiber and a large biomass source that can help companies "go green" by creating a wide variety of opportunities and products by supplementing or replacing more commonly used, problematic and stressed raw material sources.

THAT industrial hemp can help farmers looking to diversify their farm operations and fits well into increasingly popular organic, low input and sustainable methods of agriculture.

THAT industrial hemp's oil-rich seed has an exceptionally high content of vital Essential Fatty Acids (or EFAs, omega-3 and omega-6) that nutritionists have found to be deficient in our diets. A diet rich in EFAs can help alleviate and prevent many common ailments.

THAT industrial hemp can be a key to creating a "green" future and sustainable, value-added industries in our neighborhoods, cities, provinces and country.

THEREFORE, your petitioners call upon the House to make certain that the commitments in the throne speech to reduce GHG emissions include utilizing the many benefits of industrial hemp in the following ways:

  • Invest in the construction of industrial hemp processing facilities in Canada.

  • Utilize the pulping of Canadian industrial hemp when making paper and paper products.

  • Utilize industrial hemp biomass in the making of bio-fuels.

  • Further repeal the restrictions for farmers of Canadian industrial hemp by moving the control and regulation of industrial hemp from the Department of Health to the Department of Agriculture, as it is an agricultural crop not unlike wheat, or corn.

  • Shift current subsidies towards sustainable businesses, such as those dealing with industrial hemp and Canadian farmers who grow industrial hemp.

  • Assure us that more is being done to develop and maintain industrial hemp seed diversity within Canada.

  • Sincerely,
