Philosophy
A lifetime of hiking the lush valleys and meadows and climbing some of the most magnificent peaks in North America from Southern Washington to Northern British Columiba is represented in most of Steve's work. Influenced by other vanishing landscape artists such as Lawren Harris, Emily Carr and Les Weisbrich, he is driven by colour to produce dramatic, bold imagery befittin the spectacular vistas that very few of us get to gaze upon.

The article, Dilemma in the Marketplace
, was first written in 2005 to address concerns from clients who, because of Chinese politics, are loath to support Chinese made goods. Hemp & Company in 2008 still strives to source local products and abide by environmental standards.
Since I wrote this article, we have collected names on a petition to the Federal Government asking that our politicians support the building of a factory which to make hemp textiles. Such a factory would aid both Canadian farmers and manufacturers. Victoria MP Denise Savoie has kindly offered to present our petition in the House of Commons in the near future. Sourcing Canadian made textiles would bring our clothing industry closer to home, and alleviate the need to buy our fabrics from China.
I would also like to mention the following local manufacturers of goods which H&C sells.
Body Care Products: The Hempest, HempenStuff, our own H&C soaps, and O'My lubricants are all made in Canada from Canadian grown hemp oil.
Clothing: Hemp & Company shirts, which are 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton, are made in Vancouver, BC
Lillikoi, Devil May Wear, Tola, Nektar, Shiznit and Maha Devi are all young Canadian design studios from the Kootenays, Vancouver, or Victoria who make their clothing locally.
Mountains of the Moon, Sweetgrass and Blue Canoe are US companies who sew their goods in their country.
Efforts and Nomads are both Canadian companies who manufacture their clothing in China, but each have assured us of the ethics available in the process.

Zee Spot and L'il Inkers create 100% organic cotton baby and children's clothing which are made in India.
Food: We sell healthy hemp seeds (high in protein and full of essential omega oils) from three Canadian farm sources. Rocky Mountain Grain from Lethbridge Alberta, Manitoba Harvest, and The Good Seed Company which grows Certified Organic hemp seeds in Saskatchewan.
Packaging: Our shopping bags are made in Greater Vancouver of 100% biodegradable plastic which decompose to nothing after two years in a landfill.
Robert Bateman – Not a Pretty Picture is a moving portrayal of the lengths Canada’s pre-eminent wildlife artist is willing to go to in order to protect our precious coast from the threat of oil spills.
Spurred by recent news of proposed oil pipelines and a supertanker port on the central coast of BC and released just before the 19th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Robert Bateman takes a stand. The two and a half minute video highlights the richness of BC’s coast and gives us a graphic example of exactly what is at stake. Bateman surprises us with a simple yet poignant act to save the coast. “If we allow tanker traffic there is going to be an oil spill. One accident is too many.”
View the video at www.notankers.ca and sign the petition to keep BC’s north coast oil tanker free.
For over 35 years the coastal waters of BC have been protected from oil tanker traffic. This ban on tankers is now under threat. Plans to build pipelines and a supertanker port in Kitimat by Enbridge are moving forward with support from the BC and Canadian governments. But there is still time to save our coast.
Join the successive generations that have kept oil tankers out of BC waters for over thirty years.
