Art Opening #1Vic West - 422 Craigflower Rd, Victoria - throughout AugustArtist - Sheryl GuzauskasI am an artist, photographer and believer in the power of love, more concerned with finding the beauty, magic and the sacred in each other and the world, than dwelling over the mistakes, crimes and the damage we humans have done and continue to. I try to take responsibility for doing what I can to stop the cycle of hate at my doorstep. By practicing gratitude, kindness and tolerance of an imperfect world and those we love, then maybe we can live an authentic life... we can have peace when we learn to forgive, especially ourselves....
Art Opening #2502 Baker Street - Nelson - throughout AugustArtist - Graham JonesBorn and raised on the Canadian west coast and living in Nelson for the last ten years has helped give me an appreciation of what it means to be "Western Canadian". I have been photographing life for fourteen years now and often find myself looking at things as though through a lens. My background in photography is self-taught while my inspiration comes from other photographers as well as through the ability to capture a moment. I have a penchant for the abstract and enjoy the manipulation of the process in creating an image. This current work is meant to look at the simple beauty found in nature. There are so many wondrous things that go unnoticed in this fast paced age. It’s really time to slow down and take a look around. I always try to stop and smell the flowers…you should to. Join us for the Artwalk reception Friday, August 10 from 6-9pm. H&CArticlesSpotlight: Herbivore ClothingFrom: Portland, Oregon Started: by Josh Hooten and his wife, Michelle Schwegmann after discovering that all the other clothing with animal rights slogans wasn't quite cool enough. Josh was a graphic designer with a friend who could screen print, so he decided to make t-shirts the way he wanted to. Printed on: American Apparel cotton (and organic cotton) t-shirts. Completely American made and sweatshop free. What's green about it?: The environmental side of these shirts is that they promote veg*n lifestyles (which is always good for the environment) with humorous messages like "Praise Seitan" or "Cowhugger". Herbivore wants their shirts to: get people thinking, asking questions, talking about vegetarianism, educate, look good, support vegetarians, make it easy to share and be proud about your cruelty-free lifestyle choices. What else: Herbivore also produces a magazine (the "Herbivore Magazine"), which also began as a reaction to the lack of good vegan oriented literature. Focused on creating a celebratory, activist based publication that is thoughtful while remaining light hearted and fun (like vegetarians!). They opened their first "Herbivore Store" in Portland last year, which carries their clothing designs and a variety of accessories "including handbags fashioned of hemp and bike inner tubes, leather-free belts, and a respectable collection of books from vegan cupcakes to preparing beans" (~via SeeingGreen.org) Also Once Herbivores paid the Bills they also lend what they can to various vegetarian groups like the SHAC 7, Peta, Student Animal Rights Alliance, Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary (and others).
