Karen Gillmore — Biographical information:
Karen Gillmore’s career as an artist began in Seattle’s Pike Place Market in 1974, where for ten years she sold her art and jewelry. Among her many other art adventures she traveled from coast to coast on the street fair circuit, did a stint as art director on a medieval village re-creation project, indulged herself in theatre and costume design, and has seen her art published through a satisfying variety of illustration jobs. In 1992 she migrated north to Victoria, and has since been exploring new media and subjects as fast as her overactive muse can lead her to them.

Artist’s Statement:
Eclectic is the only word to completely describe my art. My images are often Celtic, medieval, magical, or mythical in character, woven together with the landscapes of the West Coast and living things from all over the universe. The media I use most often these days are collage, watercolour, acrylic, and printmaking, and lately — papier mâché sculpture! I am also totally shameless in combining any and all of the above in my mixed media creations.
Whether composing an image or a sculpture, I’ll try any medium or technique that I think will give me the effect that I see in my mind. I also like to play with my media without having a specific image in mind, mixing them together to see what will happen – if it’s good, I do it again – if not, I tear it up for a collage! I believe that this spirit of experimentation is good for what ails you, artistically or otherwise, and I like to pass this on to students when I teach workshops or classes. My goal when teaching others is to lead them to discover their own style, as well as the joy of creating unique work that comes from the heart.

Hot Hot Bloomin Hotness Part 2

During a recent trip to the Interior we paid a visit to Bill's "long lost" cousin Ron Coghlan on his
organic Farm on Stein Mountain on the edge of the Stein Valley near Lytton BC.
Obviously the end of May is planting time so we pitched in with bedbuilding, raking, compost application and planting. During the day that we visited five of us, including Ahna and Jessie, planted a field of squashes which will be sold in the fall at the Trout Lake Market in Vancouver.
Ron and his wife, Erin have farmed this land for 22 years subsidized by Erin's work as a midwife birth coach and counsellor. With limited machinery, glacial irrigation, organic practices and lots of love and energy a huge variety of vegetables, fruit and herbs flourish in Canada's hotspot.
Lunch was largely provided from the salad garden, beets from the root cellar and the grains that are a staple of all organic kitchens. It was delicious with the added seasoning of a healthy farm working appetite.
The day was the most fulfilling day of our week's journey. Thanks to Ron and Erin for DOING IT!
If you ever get internet up there, Ron, check out our web site!
