As a few readers may remember, back in 1995 I reviewed a best-selling book, When Corporations Rule the World by David C. Korten. Now, more than a decade later, Mr. Korten has written a second book The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community which completes the train of though begun in the first. This review will encompass both books.
For all of us who are observing with unease bordering on despair what is going on in our newly global world — and, even worse, how that damaged global world is increasingly affecting our quiet refuge here — these two books are of great importance. As the products of a highly intelligent master-thinker they will provide readers with clear explications of our vague fears and intuitive forebodings about the half-understood events we see all about us.

February was a busy month at H&C. Our participation in 2 fashion shows created enough activity to brighten up the rainy winter days and provide a focus for the month.
On Tuesday the 20th, H&C and Shift Natural Fashions modeled our Hemp Blend, Bamboo and Soy clothing in a Fashion Show presented by the interact Club of Oak Bay High School which is associated with the Rotarians. Funds were raised to assist the Cotlands Aids Orphanage in South Africa through the admission price and a silent auction to which many local businesses contributed. Thank you to the Victoria Event Centre for contributing a percentage of the bar receipts to the cause.
A few days later, we geared up again for The Ethical Purchasing Forum at U Vic. and on Saturday night, with the assistance of our great volunteer models Dierdre, Jocelyn, Roger, Troy, Angela, Kristi, Cloe, Crystal and the amazing stilt walker, Andrea we attempted to entice a 100 or so practiced fashion resistors to succumb to the benefits of wearing our natural, durable, and sustainable clothing. Time will tell if we conveyed our message. Many of the attendees received prizes for answering our M.C. Bill Finley's skill testing questions. After the show, a marimba band got everyone on their feet to conclude the Fun Filled Forum.
If you haven't heard yet, a contest is being held to name the 500 Johnson St. Block and a draw is being held for a $1000 shopping spree in participating shops. We'd love to see you get the chance to win.

Very simply, it's a way of broadcasting audio, video, text or image files. Our Hemp and Company podcast contains only audio files, covering thoughtful lectures based on industrial hemp. A Podcast is a media file that is distributed by subscription (free) over the internet using syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers.
A feed is a list of episodes (and their URLs) of the show that may be accessed. This list is published in RSS format ('Really Simple Syndication') which provides other information, such as publishing date, titles of the episode, and accompanying text descriptions of the series and each of its episodes.

The following recipe for green smoothie is a staple in our household. Ken generally makes a full Vitamix container of this in the morning and we drink at least a large glass of this for breakfast (sometimes more) and have some more at lunch time or at other times of the day. (Recipe provided by Ken Steele and Linda Chan from VIVA-Raw)
Ken’s Power Green Smoothie Recipe:
3 cups water
3 large (or 4 small) bananas, cut up
1 apple (cored), cut up in four
1 tbsp. pumpkin seed
1 tbsp. flax seed
4 rounded tbsp. of hemp seed (approximately ¼ cup) *
1 slice of lemon (minus seeds, but including the rind if you’re using a Vitamix blender)
3 to 4 stalks of celery, cut up in bite size pieces *
Green leafy vegetable of your choice, torn or cut up - use small amount at first then build up to 4 cups (approximately a head of lettuce or half a bunch of kale)
2 to 4 cups of frozen fruit of your choice (berries, peaches, mangos)
1 teaspoon of maca powder (optional) *
Place ingredients in a Vitamix or blender and process not more than 30 seconds at a time. Running blender too long at a time heats ups unit and wears out the motor in addition to destroying the healthful enzymes that provide us with nutritional and digestive benefits.
Discussion of Green Smoothie Ingredients:
Hemp Seeds: Hemp seeds offer a balanced and very desirable EFA (Essential Fatty Acids) ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. The protein in hemp seed is also exceptionally high
quality in terms of amino acid (AA) composition and protein structure, the latter affecting digestibility and utilization by the human body. Hemp protein contains all of the essential amino acids in more nutritionally significant amounts and at a ratio closer to a “complete” source of protein (like meat, milk and eggs) than all other oil seeds except soy.
Celery: The minerals contained in celery juice make the body's use of calcium more effective, balancing the blood's pH. It is also a great electrolyte source.
Green Leafy Vegetables: Quantity depends on choice (e.g. leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, kale, chard, collard greens, other Chinese greens such as gai-lan, bok choy). The darker the green, the better for you, but use small quantities at first and build up to about 4 cups (approximately a head of lettuce or half a bunch of kale). Greens are an important source of vitamins, minerals and protein.
Maca Powder: This is a super food which boosts energy, stamina and mental function. It also provides the body with many healthful nutrients, including potassium and calcium.
Green Smoothies are:
Great tasting
Ready in minutes
Easy to prepare
Easy to digest
Nutrient dense
Green smoothies provide all the vitamins, minerals and protein the body needs.
Victoria Boutenko’s , award winning book Green for Life reveals the unique healing potential of green smoothies derived from her extensive research into achieving optimal health on a raw food diet. This book also documents testimonies of her research subjects (Roseburg Study), who drank 1 quart of her green smoothie every day for one month in addition to their regular diet. To Victoria’s great satisfaction, everybody who participated for the duration of the study, achieved substantial health benefits despite their different dietary habits.
