Hemp Nutrition

The following is a selection . . .

taken from The Good Seed Grain Merchants nutrition information document: [132 KB .pdf pdf]

Here are the reasons why hemp has so many health benefits:

1. Hemp contains healthy protein, called Globulin Edestin, which we can easily digest and use as the building blocks for our body structure. This healthy protein is classed as a type of plasma protein, which means it is very similar to human blood plasma. Our body uses pure Globulin Edestin to manufacture enzymes, hormones, hemoglobin, antibodies, fibrogin and blood plasma. The vital duties performed by these cells include: recognizing invading infections, attacking invading infections, neutralizing alien microorganisms and toxins, repairing tissue damaged by infections, carrying nutrient to tissue and storing amino acids in reservoirs for our body to use to respond to injury and infection. 65% of the protein found in hemp is Globulin Edestin, the highest concentration of this wonderful building material than in any other seed. Put simply, eating hemp seed gives our network of cells the necessary material to carry out their primary goal of keeping our immune system strong

2. Hemp contains sufficient quantities of all 9 Essential Amino Acids. Amino acids are the smallest building blocks of the protein world. Our bodies use amino acids from our food and reassemble them to make specific proteins according to what we need and what types of amino acids are available. When we have a good supply of these protein building amino acids our muscles stay strong, and our body is able to react quickly and effectively to changes, pressures, injuries and infections. Hemp is one of the few plant seeds containing all 9 kinds.

3. Hemp contains healthy fats, which are balanced in the ratios that the body needs them. These fats are called Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), the most important types being Omega 3, Omega 6 & Omega 9. They are found in every cell in our body. These 3 fats are called ‘essential’ because they are vital to keeping us alive and can only be obtained through the food we eat. EFA’s are only useful to us if we receive them in a relatively balance ratio. Over the past 2.5 million years, humans have lived on a diet with a ratio of roughly 1 part Omega-3 to 3 parts Omega-6 (1:3 ratio). Modern scientific analysis says the healthy range is between 1:2 and 1:4, with 1:2 being optimal for cardiovascular health. The miraculous hemp seed is the only seed containing a very healthy, balanced ratio of EFA’s, requiring no additional foods to complete the balance. Hemp contains 25% Omega-3 and 55% Omega-6, creating a heart healthy ratio of 1:2. Omega 9 is an especially rare yet important EFA, also referred to as Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA). Also found in borage oil and evening primrose oil, GLA is very effective in balancing out hormones.

The most important functions of EFA’s include: governing growth, vitality and state of mind, carrying oxygen throughout the body, holding proteins and oxygen within each individual cell, carrying toxins to be expelled, improving circulation, tissue elasticity, blood flow and maintaining healthy bio-electric currents important to our nerves, muscles, heart and membrane functions.

4. Hemp shells contain fiber and chlorophyll. When harvested, hemp seeds have a hard outer shell, a green colored inner shell, and the white inner-nut. We de-shell our hemp, removing 95% of the outer hard shells, but leaving as much of the green inner shell and white inner-nut as possible. The few hard shells which are left in our hemp nuts provide optimum quality fiber, which gently cleanses the intestines and colon as it passes through our digestive tract. Intestinal health is the key to healthy weight loss and improved energy levels. So enjoy the ‘crunch’ in the hemp nuts, its good for you.

The green-colored inner shells, on the other hand, are soft and filled with chlorophyll. This is the active healthy ingredient that has made wheat grass so popular over the last decade. Chlorophyll assists our bodies in producing enzymes which have many healing and energy boosting properties.

Suggested Use: Hemp is good for everyone to eat, and there have been no reported allergies to hemp nuts. Hemp is gluten free, raw and vegan. Add hemp nuts to your salads, cereal, breads, vegetables, sandwiches, soups, smoothies or eat it by the spoonful if you want. 2 - 4 heaping tablespoons of hemp nut with fruit and yogurt is a good amount of hemp nuts to consume for breakfast, giving your body a healthy start.

If you are trying to lose weight, begin by curbing your consumption of heavy starches, sugars and cholesterols such as pasta, rice, bread, and potatoes. Instead of these fillers, eat between 8 & 12 heaping tablespoons of hemp throughout the day accompanied by low calorie and high protein foods, preferably fruits, vegetables, nuts and/or small portions of lean meat. Make sure you drink lots of water as your body will naturally start to detoxify itself. The hemp ensures that your body is getting plenty of the required nutrition for proper health and cell maintenance, as well as gently cleansing your digestive tract and giving you energy to burn calories.

We highly recommend hemp nut for pregnant mothers, nursing mothers and for toddlers being introduced to solid foods. Hemp will help the fetus develop properly while keeping the mother healthy and her skin soft and supple; able to recover from the pregnancy with less risk of stretch damage. Hemp will continue to allow nursing mothers to produce healthy breast milk, in turn helping the newborn baby to get all that is needed for proper mental and physical development. Finally, when children start eating solid foods, hemp can continue to provide them with the essential building blocks to grow, learn and stay healthy.

Anyone with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis or eczema would be greatly encouraged to add hemp to their diet as soon as possible. People with these conditions need the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids found in hemp seed so that their bodies can properly respond to the illness by improving circulation, increasing tissue elasticity, getting oxygen and protein to more cells, and decreasing joint inflammation. Again, people with these conditions should definitely cut out all unnecessary starches, sugars, saturated fats and carbohydrates from their diets, replacing these filler foods with 8 – 12 heaping tablespoons of hemp nut per day.

We sincerely hope that our organically grown hemp seed will help maintain and improve your health. Enjoy the hemp!
